Course Description

The POET  has one Area of Concentration named “Retextualization Processes” within which are nested two lines of Research “Theory, Critic and History of Translation” e “Translation, teaching/ acquisition of foreign language and new media”. POET’s Curriculum offers a number of courses that cover both lines of research. For the Master’s Degree, students must complete at least 24 course credits and 6 additional credits awarded to a written dissertation, adding up to 30 credits.

From the total of 24 obligatory course credits, students are required to take 14 credits in the following courses:

  • Metodologia de Pesquisa em Estudos da Tradução (Research Methods in Translation Studies), 04 credits;
  • Teorias da Tradução I: textos clássicos (Theories of Translation I: classical texts), 04 credits;
  • Seminário de Pesquisa em Estudos da Tradução (Research Seminar in Translation Studies), 02 credits;
  • HGP9023 Estágio de Docência I (Teaching Internship), 04 credits.

There is one mandatory course to each research line. Thus, for Theory, Critic and History of Translation, students must take Literary Critic and Translation and for Translation, teaching/ acquisition of foreign language and new medias students must take Translation and learning of foreign languages. The remaining 6 credits are to be chosen among elective courses offered.

Mandatory courses may be taught in either Portuguese or English. Elective courses may be taught in any other language.

The thesis/dissertation can be written in either Portuguese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish or any other language in which the advisor think fit, provided the examining committee is fluent in the chosen language.

This course aims at providing the methodological tools that will help students deal with the theoretical problems they are investigating in their research.

HGP9001 – Theories of Translation I: classical texts

This course intends to familiarise the student with the history of translation theory as well as broaden their knowledge on the first attempts of many different scholars to understand the translation process. The course will focus on the reading of classical texts on translation written until de first half of the XX century. It also contemplates the study of the history of translation in a certain era, how it was practised, by whom, to what ends, how frequently, etc.

HGP9002 – Research Seminars in Translation Studies

This course consists in a series of seminars conducted by the instructor or by invited guests within each line of research. Students taking this course are required to attend seminars by their colleagues and present a seminar themselves on a theme they are developing in their dissertations. The qualification exam will take place only after the student has completed this course.

HGP9003 – Literary Critic and Translation

This course is mandatory for the research line Theory, Critic and History of Translation. This course consists in the study and critical analysis of literary translations. Tools from the Theory of Literature and Textual Criticism are applied to the critic of literary translations.

HGP9004 – Translation and learning of foreign languages

This course is mandatory for the line of research Translation, teaching/acquisition of foreign language and new media. This course will tackle notions of translation and teaching/ learning of foreign languages from the point of view of applied linguistics. It will discuss how how this relationship changed in time and how it was described in the bibliography. Theoretical stances against and in favour of the use of translation in the classroom. The double role of translation: the use of translation in the classroom (when and how it happens) e and the didactics of translation.

HGP9007 – Translation Practice I

Practical workshop focusing on the translation of technical and specialized texts based on critical reflections, alowing each student to develop and deepen practical translation skills and to apply theoretical principles. Students are required to read and discuss texts from the main areas of translation studies and to also produce translations of their own.

Practical workshop focusing on the translation of literary texts based on critical reflections, alowing each student to develop and deepen practical translation skills and to apply theoretical principles. This course aims to familiarize and to further the knowledge of students on the contemporary theories on translation (from the XXth century onwards) that see translation as a manipulation if signs, including: the problems of equivalence; traductological topologies; translation methods; translation, textual coherence and coesion; cognitive and discursive aspects of translation; the building and use of translation tools (dictionaries, lexica, programs, thesauri, concordances etc). HGP9018 – Translation and Film Adaptation

This course intends to raise questions related to the translation of literary texts for the screen, taking into account theoretical and methodological principles that see cinematographic adaptation of literary works of art as translation. The course will try to challenge the reading of canonical and non-canonical texts and the possible implications of their representation in new cultural and/or poetical contexts.

The aim of this course is to study the cognitive processes involved in translation. It seeks to investigate the questions of how competence in translation is acquired, the translator’s behaviour during translation and the respective methodologies suited to investigate these questions such as verbal protocols and eye tracking.
