Translation as Cultural Transfer in Migration/Exile in South America

The intellectual exile is, as Edward Said has it in Culture and Imperialism (1993), a “political figure between domains, between forms, between homes, and between languages” (p. 333). Similarly, the émigré translator can become a catalyst in the conceptualisation of alternative worlds by initiating a dialogue with other cultures and languages. One of the strategies of émigré authors in the exploration of their specific intercultural condition is self-translation. Through self-translation, they perform a specific act of cultural transfer in that they address two audiences and perform their fragmented identity between cultures. In her PhD thesis Bilingualism and Biculturalism in Self-Translation (2000), Corinne Scheiner emphasizes that the differences between original and self-translated text are “clearly marked as situational and cultural” (p. 87). In this research project, I propose to analyse the situational and cultural premises on which are founded the self-translated texts by émigré authors and translators in South America. The project touches on questions of translation, multilingualism and displacement in the works of authors who fled their home countries to South America. The project will contrast selected authors in their identity as translators, analyse selected passages from their self-translation and aim to deduce conclusions as to their condition as migrants/exiles and their integration into their new homeland(s).
